Fourward Thinking: Your 401(k) Game Plan

By Nick Hemsted

Fourward Thinking is about breaking things down into four manageable steps. Each set of tips is designed to help you approach your 401(k) decisions with clarity.

1. Design your plan like a product.
What behaviors do you want to drive? What experience do you want employees to have? A plan that works for people is a plan people use.

2. You can’t fix what you don’t measure.
Participation, deferral rates, match take-up, and leakage are all metrics that matter. Review them quarterly. Success is more than just having a plan—it’s about results.

3. Your 401(k) can support retention—but only if people see its value.
Highlight it in onboarding, performance reviews, and leadership meetings. Make it part of your narrative. A benefit unrecognized is a benefit unused.

4. You spend real money on your 401(k). Treat it like any other major investment.
Fees, fund performance, and plan usage are all measurable. You’d audit any other six-figure budget—why not your benefits? ROI matters here, too.

Planning doesn’t have to be about control.

It can be about freedom.

We work with people who want more intention - not more to-do lists.
